Starting the day right
Today being Halloween, I thought it would be a good time to share the wisdom I have gathered from others, especially the importance of how we begin each day. Starting the day right is imperative to having a good day, and to improving your health.
Why on Halloween?
Well, because this a day when some of us would normally indulge ourselves with lots of candy and/or party food. So it’s as good a day as any to take stock of our routines. Even if you indulge today, start the day right tomorrow, which is All Saint’s Day, with a new routine, in honor of your deceased loved ones.

Starting the day right always begins with a prayer of gratitude.
As soon as I wake up, I begin to give thanks to God for a brand new day with a clean slate… all mistakes are in the past, and I also give thanks for my children, my home, our health and our joy.
Then I stand and start to stretch. I’ve only been stretching for a few weeks now, but I can really feel the difference. The past few years, since I turned 50, I have stiffness and joint pain, especially when I get out of the bed. The stretching helps loosen those joints and muscles. All I do is start reaching for the stars, and then I dip over sideways, and then I lean backwards. This only takes a couple of minutes, so even if I have a packed schedule, I still take the time to stretch.
Next I sit in the lotus position and meditate. If you are familiar with Reiki, this is the time that I call on the Creator’s universal life force energy to fill my body, mind and spirit with love, light and healing energy. As I feel the surge go through my body, I also send it with love to whomever God has laid on my heart that might need an extra helping of God’s love this day. This can take anywhere from three to thirty minutes, depending on how much time I have.
Then I have breakfast. I spent most of my life skipping breakfast, but doctors agree that this is the most important meal of the day. My Mother used to say I should analyze the word breakfast to understand its importance.
BREAK-FAST.
Breakfast “breaks” the “fast” you have been on while sleeping.
I usually have juice and an egg, but sometimes I have a waffle – yum! I have been known to have leftovers from last night’s supper meal… whatever you eat, just eat something.
According to Marlene Merritt, a nutritionist, practitioner of Eastern medicine, and founder of the Merritt Wellness Center in Austin, Texas, “Forty percent of your blood sugar is used for brain function, so if you’re not eating enough, you can’t think clearly, never mind doing anything else.”

As the day progresses, I try to drink lots of water. Again, this is something I have spent most of my life avoiding until 2009. Now that we live in a dryer environment, I have found that I crave water, which is wonderful. My daughter and I drink Nestle’s Pure Life Purified Bottled Water, which is quite affordable at Wal-Mart.
Here’s wishing you a blessed All Hallow’s Eve and All Saints Day.
