The Idea of Hell came from Zoroastrianism

When I was a child, the idea of hell just gnawed away at me as absurd, just as many of the old testament writings did. As I continued studying and growing in faith – the faith of love as taught by Jesus, Buddha and many others, I began to see the hand of man (or hands of men) as instrumental in developing the book known by many as the word of God.

Why does one believe that the Bible is the word of God?

If you think about it, they only believe it because it is what they were taught. Too much authority has been handed over to preachers and evangelists, instead of each one taking control of their own knowledge, wisdom, faith and thought processes.

Why does one believe that a loving God, more capable of love than any human, would choose to torture and torment his creation? Many say that it is the person’s choice, not God’s, but that is not logical either. For God would have had to created such a place of condemnation, and my view of God, is not one of a creator of chaos and pain.

Zoroastrianism is older than Judaism and Christianity. Their description of hell is atrocious, just as many continue to describe it today.

Studying world religions and anthropology courses in college simply confirmed what I already knew deep inside. I wrote against the belief in hell and the apocalypse many years ago. I believe the Bible is based on metaphors and parables. There is a deeper meaning hidden in its verses, that far too many people are neglecting.

We each have seeds of goodness and evil inside of us – the seeds we nurture will determine our future.

Live in the light.

Scholars of Zoroastrianism find that in earlier texts,

the souls would be subjected to everlasting punishment in hell, later the belief was that they would be destroyed in the molten metal of the Apocalypse, and even later belief holds that the molten metal will actually purify everything, allowing even the wicked to proceed to heaven. However, the ultimate fate of the wicked is not conclusively explained in any of the hell texts themselves.

Edgar Cayce Reading for Easter

I admit I have become  a bit jaded when I see or hear those claiming to be Christian bombard us with their boldness to stand up for Christ, while their day to day live continue to ignore the teachings of Jesus.

That being said, I have always enjoyed the teachings of Edgar Cayce, who always put the teachings of Jesus FIRST in his life.

His reading for Easter, although several decades old (March 24, 1940 ), still applies to us today.

Then, as ye meditate upon the meaning of the resurrection of this man of God—know that the way is open to thee to approach the throne of God; not as an excuse, not as a justification, but rather in love, in harmony, in that which brings hope for a sin-sick world.

Each individual, then, may act, may live, may pray—in his or her own little sphere of activity—in such a manner as to bring peace and harmony, even among those who appear to be at variance to the cause of the Christ in the material world.

My Lenten Blessing

A couple of weeks ago, our neighborhood had a yard sale and I saw a “good-as-new” Bible for sale. It was “The Message,” which was a version I do not own, so I thought it would be a good addition to my library.

This Bible was practically new, looked like it had never been used and had no writings in it, not even an owner’s name.

My daughter’s birthday was coming up, so I thought I might even give it to her as an extra study Bible.

A day later, one of our friends came to visit and brought along a young man that I had only met once before. He saw the Bible on the table and picked it up, mentioning that he wanted that particular version.

We continued talking and I found out he had only been attending church for a couple of years and had never owned a Bible of his own!

WOW! Naturally, I gave him the Bible and he was so excited. You cannot imagine what a blessing it was to see a 21 year old young man attending college become so unbelievably happy and excited to own his own Bible!

I had to thank HIM for allowing me to witness such an event and to have a part in it.

I was the one who was blessed!

There are many Lenten blessings if we pay attention, and sometimes there are just as many trials that appear during this season.

When we focus on the blessings, they seem to multiply and make the frustrations easier to bear.

Happy Lenten Season to you all!
